A guide for Garland homeowners

Hiring a garage door contractor in Texas

Don't expect a state garage door license number, because Texas doesn't issue one. Ask for proof of insurance and a written scope instead. This site doesn't vouch for any contractor, so these checks are yours to make.

What Texas licenses

The state licensing agency's list of regulated trades has no category for garage doors. It does license electricians, so if a job adds an outlet or circuit for an opener, ask who is doing the wiring and whether they hold a state license.

What nearby cities do

Registration usually matters when a job needs a permit. Ask the contractor whether yours does and who pulls it.

Questions to ask

  • Who will do the work: your own employee or a subcontractor?
  • What insurance do you carry, and can I see proof?
  • What does the written scope list: parts, labor, haul-away?
  • What does the written warranty cover, and for how long?
  • What is the total price?

Then read recent reviews on a site you trust.

Paying and signing

The Texas Department of Insurance's storm advice works for any repair. Check references. Don't pay in full up front, hold the final payment until the work is done and never sign a contract with blank spaces.
