After the hail
Dented and storm-damaged garage door panels
Shallow dents on a door that still runs straight can usually wait. Creases, cracks or a door that binds in its tracks need a contractor. If you're claiming on insurance, take photos first.
Repair a section or replace the door
| What you see | Likely path | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A few shallow dents, no creases | Often left alone | The door still runs true. |
| One bent or cracked section | Replace that section | Only if a matching section for your door model can still be had. |
| Dents across several sections | Often a new door | Matching color and texture across mixed sections is hard. |
| Damage on an old door | Usually a new door | Other parts are likely to start failing soon too. |
If insurance is involved

Photograph the door and the driveway before anything is moved, then follow the Texas Department of Insurance's advice:
- File the claim as soon as you can.
- Turn down anyone who offers to waive your deductible. That is illegal for a homeowner's policy in Texas.
- Don't pay in full up front, and hold the final payment until the work is done.
- Never sign a contract with blank spaces.
