Car stuck in the garage
Go through these in order and stop at the first one that gets you out safely.
In order
Switch off the engine
Exhaust builds up quickly in a closed garage. Nothing below needs the engine running.
Check the simple causes
Is the opener plugged in? Does the wall button work when the remote doesn't? Is a lock setting on?
Look at the door
Stand back and look at both sides. A loose cable, a crooked panel or a gap at one corner means the door shouldn't be moved.
Try the release cord, only if the door is fully down
The red cord detaches the door from the opener, and you can then lift it by hand. If it feels extremely heavy, lower it and stop.
Still stuck?
Leave the car, take another way out of the house, and call a contractor. Say where the door and the car are, and what you saw in step three.
What not to try
- Don't drive into or push against a closed door.
- Don't wedge a jack, a board or a bar under a door that is partly open.
- Don't pull the release cord on a door that is up or halfway. It can drop.
The cord disconnects the opener, and that is all it does. If a spring has broken, you would be lifting the door's whole weight by hand.
